In 2016, BYD made its debut in the Indian automobile industry by supplying Olectra Greenwich Ltd. with bus chassis and batteries. Its manufacturing facilities are located in Tamil Nadu, at the Sriperumbudur facility. In 2022, BYD began producing electric passenger cars in small quantities using a semi-knockdown method. The versions that have been assembled include the Atto 3 (since November 2022) and the fleet-oriented e6 (from September 2022).
Plans to invest in and manufacture automobiles in India were cancelled in July 2023 as a result of government inspection and security concerns. Before 2025, BYD Auto had intended to invest USD 1 billion in a local joint venture with Megha Engineering to start manufacturing.
Moving forward with this investment, BYD is planning to launch BYD Seagull on 2024
